Good evening Brothers and Sisters, As I write this article it's only one day after Local 4 held a special meeting concerning newly proposed language for the Thyssen and ECA labor contracts. Under Article XXVI Sec. 4 of the Local 4 Constitution and By-Laws the newly proposed language was read off and after a thorough question and answer period the members in attendance voted by secret ballot. The final tallied results were to accept the new language proposal. In a time where mechanic employment and potential retirees have slowed dramatically due to economic and other varying factors this new contract language will provide an avenue for IUEC members to remain and or obtain employment prior to companies being able to acquire an inexperienced probationary apprentice. It will further provide increased flexibility to remain gainfully employed while awaiting a permanent mechanic position. If you have not already obtained a copy, the entire language can be viewed, downloaded and printed at the Local 4 website www.iueclocal4.com This language that has already been accepted on a Local level will now be voted on by your Local 4 delegates at a national ratification meeting on December 7th, 2009 in Maryland and the results of that national vote shall be announced at upcoming union meetings and also placed on the Local 4 website for review. The Local has recently finished two extremely important arbitrations, both of them with Kone. Legal briefs outlining union and company testimony along with highlighted CBA positions will be presented to the arbitrator for final written argument and ultimately a binding decision on both parties. In these particular cases Kone deprived certain longstanding potential working conditions to members seeking employment and then further reduced mechanics hourly wages to try and supplement profits. As soon as the arbiter's decision is available the Local will announce the results at the next regularly scheduled union meeting. With the ensuing New Year upon us there will be an adjustment in the compensation rate of mileage. Reimbursement for mileage when using your personal vehicle is dictated by the IRS rate. Beginning on January 1, 2010, the standard mileage rate for the use of your personal vehicle shall be compensated at 50 cents per driven mile. Please stay current of any future vehicle mileage rate changes on the Local 4 website. On behalf of all the Local 4 officers, Deb and Jessica, I would like to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.
